Definizione

• Etching Ground, Etching Varnish.  A substance spread over the surface or plate for etching; it prevents the acid from biting into the surface. Such etching grounds are made of asphalt, wax, beeswax, paraffin, burgundy pitch or some resins. Generally it is a mixture – often with bitumen – and made into balls. It is spread over the surface, allowed to dry or harden to the surface so it may be carved or scribed where the incuse etching is desired, afterwards it is removed.  See acid etching, photoengraving.
