Evasion Publique Deposited

Définition
  • Evasion.  A counterfeit coin with a change of device or lettering just enough to evade counterfeiting laws. Such a coin can only exist in time and place where the public is either illiterate or does not look at their coins that closely. That condition existed in England in the 1770s when copper coins similar to the British halfpenny were struck

and passed. There was a copper coin shortage that made the problem worse. The coins were struck with dies of shallow relief – to make the coins look worn – and a legend that states "Britain Rules" rather than "Britannia." Some of these coins reached coin-hungry America and were termed Bungtowns.
