Exonumia Público Deposited

Definición
  • Exonumia.  A term for nonmonetary numismatic items. Originally it meant tokens and medals, but it is not a specific, scientific term. Created by token authority Russel Rulau in 1960, he combined the pefix exo meaning “outside of” with numia for “coins or money.”

As one of the founders of the Token and Medal Society he recognized the need for a term to characterize the objects of interest to the organization’s members, what they collected, what they studied, what they cataloged and published. The original concept for TAMS was to include paper money, but it was quickly recognized this was not a perfect fit. Paper money was excised and a separate collectors organization was formed for currency collectors and this has flourished.

But the term remains fuzzy at best and confusing at worst. What exonumia should include, certainly, are all TOKENS and token-like medals, particularly die struck on small presses. It should not include larger productions including medals larger than, say 2 inches, art medals nor any ORDERS, DECORATIONS and medals to be worn. The modern concept of the noncirculating legal tender, and similar issues of private mints, as the medals struck by Franklin Mint, are a gray area. Some of these private mint issues are collected by TAMS members, others are not. Thus the fuzzy concept of the exonumia term persists.

A person who studies or collects exonumia is an exonumist.
