- Foreign Planchet. A coin struck on the blank intended for a coin of another country. This only occurs at mints that are performing custom minting, usually for a country that does not have its own minting facilities. Often the blank is lodged in the feeding mechanism of a coining press, or a hopper; is shaken loose and fed in with correct blanks intended for the correct striking. It could be a foreign planchet on the local country's coin, or a local planchet for a foreign country's coin. Knowledge of what coins were being struck at what time in what mint is required. This can often be obtained from mint reports, but it takes a very observant numismatist to recognize the piece for what itis. Obviously a coin struck on a foreign planchet needs to be described in full during cataloging.
