Definition

• Maquette.  A design sketch in clay or wax for a sculpture work to be executed in greater detail later. Often of smaller size than the intended sculpture, a maquette is usually done quickly to test the visual elements in the mind of the artist. If the artist does several maquettes he can choose the most promising one to develop into full detail or full size. A maquette is to a sculptor as a thumbnail drawing is to a graphic artist.  See design, sketch.
