Definition

• Picking.  In hand engraving, to move surface metal to work up or create relief rising from the surface of a die; also called upsetting. The metal for the raised detail comes from the adjacent surrounding surface area (which must be smoothed out after moving the required amount of metal). Obviously this raised detail or area on a die will strike sunken area in the struck piece.  See upsetting (1).
