Definizione

• Pile.  The die in the lower position. A pile is mated with a trussell or punch; the trussell is driven into the pile. In ancient times (and for most coining throughout the years) the trussell was the obverse, the pile the reverse. In modern times, however, and particularly with multiple striking of medals, the obverse is placed in the pile position because it usually has the greatest cavity and this aids in seating the partially struck blank for later strikes.
