Pocket Piece Publique Deposited
- Pocket Piece. A numismatic or medallic item, such as a lucky piece, personal medal or spinning coin, which is carried (but not worn) upon a person. Prolonged carrying as a pocket piece creates a special kind of abrasion, generally with uniform wear on both sides as it rubs against the sides of the pocket, other coins and objects also carried in the pocket. Any coin or medal exhibiting extensive uniform abrasion can be considered to have once been a pocket piece. Thus only extremely rare coins or medals used as pocket pieces can be considered collectable. Breen recounts the story of Confederate President Jefferson Davis's pocket piece of the Confederate Half Dollar was confiscated from him when captured (in female garments) by Union soldiers in 1864.References: NC9 (1988} Breen, p 667.
