Definition

• Processed.  A collectors' term for a chemical, mechanical or polishing treatment applied to a coin in an attempt to give it an uncirculated appearance. Some methods to "process" coins have included rotating erasers, buffing wheels, chemical and cleaning solutions. The practice is surreptitious in an attempt to fool unwary coin collectors; serious numismatists consider it an impropriety and futility to raise the grading of any coin.
