Replacement Ribbon Público Deposited
- Replacement Ribbon. Not the original ribbon issued with a medallic item, but one that was subsequently substituted for the original which may have become damaged, worn or lost. Since ribbon is far more impermanent than the metal parts of a medallic item, generally there is no stigma against a replacement, as it is better to have a clean ribbon for wear or exhibit (or for a collection) than one soiled, worn or damaged. Ribbons of military decorations are often replaced when mounted on a bar or a uniform is refurbished, or when decorations are transferred to a new owner. Some ribbons with an elaborate pattern woven into their design may be difficult to reproduce a second time, thus no replacement has ever been available (as the French Mexico Medal, instituted 1863). In such cases the original ribbon takes on substantial value. (J&J 27:39).For most standard military decorations of the world replacement ribbon is available. Ribbon banks are maintained – both by organizations and private individuals – and medal manufacturers are often sources of short lengths of replacement ribbon. Ribbon manufacturers are not a source of replacement ribbon because they demand a large quantity minimum order (500 yards or more) because of the effort and expense to setup their looms to create a particular pattern.
