  • Ribbon Bar.  A bar wrapped with a width of ribbon, enclosed by a shell frame with clutchback fasteners on the back. Such ribbons are usually displayed alone and indicated a higher rank or importance; they are worn above brooches or bars of other ribbons. They could indicate a medal of valor as a military or naval award, or a second or subsequent award; they can be supplemented by from one to four stars, clusters or oak leaves. Used in military and to a lesser extent in sports awards.
