Routed, Routing Público Deposited
- Routed, Routing. A method of machine engraving in which a revolving cutter removes a grove or channel from the metal surface to be engraved. Control of the width of the grove is determined by the size of the cutter tip – several passes would make a wider channel or many passes would remove a large area of dead metal – the depth of the cut is determined by a machine setting. The machine is controlled by template letters or an engraving master, which are oversize to the intended engraved design, a ratio of three-to-one is preferred, but a ratio form two-to-one to twelve-to-one can be accomplished. Medals which are not hand inscribed are engraved by routing on such a machine. See machine engraving.
