• Shattered Die.  A die subjected to pressure which it cannot sustain, as during setup, causing it to crack and break in a multitude of tiny fissures forming a network of cracks much like that of a broken auto windshield. A piece struck from such a die would exhibit a network of raised lines over the shattered area. An example is a U.S. large cent of 1794 obverse (Sheldon 23, Breen 7). See broken die.
