Definition

• Skeleton Scrap.  The remaining scrap after blanks are punched from strip stock or sheet metal. Since skeleton scrap is already a reusable composition, it is ideal to be melted, rolled and milled again for strip to be used again. After it is blanked it becomes scissel, clean scrap, ideal to be melted. However long strips are not easily fed into a melting pot, so they were formerly cabbaged, folded over and over into itself like a ball. Recently a chopper was added at the end of the blanking press where the skeleton strip is chopped into small fragments that fall into a hopper. This is what is fed into the melting pot. What to do with the skeleton scrap of clad strip could have been a problem. But this was solved by the combination of metals. U.S. cent composition of copper coated zinc, for example, could be melted and reformulated into – bronze!
