Starting Dies Publique Deposited
- Starting Dies. The first die to be used to begin shaping the metal of a particularly difficult design (which requires several sets of dies). It is followed by the use of striking dies which contain the full design. In the medallic field and striking high relief medals in particular, dies containing the full design are used from the beginning; each blow is struck in the same die contain the full design and the piece is softened (annealed) between each strike. Starting dies are also called forming dies and are the first to be used in a set of progressive dies.
