Definición

• Stop.  A center dot or typographical ornament in legends or inscriptions that act as word separator, or punctuation, in lettering on coins and medals. A variety of ornamental stops have been used in lettering, most often created – like a letter or figure – by the use of a punch, puncheon. After center dots the most popular is the rosette (of any number of petals), followed by stars, tiny crosses and sunbursts. In graphic arts typographers have colorful names for these ornaments: dingbats, wingdings, doodads and such. In 19th century numismatic catalogs, publishers used exact printers' ornaments to precisely identify ornamental stops in coin and medal lettering. Today it is preferred to describe the stop in words (even if this is in parenthesis).
