Definition

• Stylus.  A sharp pointed tool to guide a mechanism to perform in a controlled manner. A stylus is used on patterns in most mechanical diecutting machines, as tracer controlled or die-engraving pantographs. The shape of the stylus's point allows it to enter crevices of the pattern and, in effect, convey this information to the cutting point to reproduce
  the relief in proportion to the pattern.  See pantograph, TRACING POINT.
