Unplated Publique Deposited
- Unplated. A medallic or numismatic item intended to be plated but is not; either one before the plating has occurred, or one that omitted it completely. It does notmean a plating that has worn off, or one purposely removed, as by electrostripping. The U.S. Lincoln cent first struck in 1982 was formed of a copper coated zinc core. The rise in the market cost of copper and the cost of coining cent pieces had risen nearly to the coin's face value. The choice of a zinc core with copper plating was inspired for the copper appearance of the coins (and for the ease of scraping by adding virgin copper to make any formula of brass!). Some error cents have surfaced struck only on the zinc core, or the copper plating not adhering and flaking off. These are described as unplated.Reference: NM19 {1991} Margolis, p 325-328.
