Updated, Updating Pubblico Deposited

Definizione
  • Updated, Updating.  The addition of lettering by punches to revise existing lettering already in struck pieces. An example is an 1838 medal in which the subject died between the time the dies were completed and first medals struck, and the time the medals were issued. Two lines were added to the reverse of the John Earl of Eldon Medal, below 12 lines of existing lettering; the added lines gave the date of his death:  OB JAN 13 / 1838. Such action precludes the expense of cutting a new die to add additional wording for posterity. It is a useful form of counterstamping.
