Plane Reverse Öffentlichkeit Deposited

Definition
  • Plane Reverse.  A side of a numismatic item without design or wording; a uniface piece; also called blank reverse. The plane reverse may have a border or rim but no other elements; such a piece may have been struck by a die with a border – or a jack die (completely flat) – but not a die containing any wording or design. In cataloging plaques, which almost always have a plane reverse, they can be identified as having a backplate or flat back. Any hanger on a plaque may be described or the piece simply termed plane.  See uniface.

Blank vs. Planchet is demonstrated in these photos. Not all blanks are planchets but all planchets are made from blanks. Center is a half dollar blank (Type I) and right a half dollar planchet after it is upset with a raised rim and perfectly round, ready to be fed into a high-speed coining press (Type II). Clad edges shown on left. Photos courtesy Fred Weinberg.
