Stipple Pubblico Deposited
- Stipple. (1) The surface of a medallic item containing a random dot pattern, usually covering the entire background. Also engraving by means of dots, in distinction to engraving by lines. Stipple is often applied by punches in hand engraving a die; since this texture is so easily applied it is not very distinctive. This form of stipple is in imitation of the painting method made of dots – pointalism. Such texture is also known as stipple-ground or pebble surface. Any application of this texture is called backgrounding by line or flat engravers. Unless it is the effect desired, experienced medal designers tend to abhor it. See texture.
