- Annealing or heat treating of both planchets and dies, to soften a planchet for striking or a steel die for engraving. Coin planchets are softened by heating and slowly cooled to room temperature before being struck into coins. Steel dies are softened to cut or sink a coin image, then hardened by tempering - heating and quick quenching in molten salt or oil to be ready for use in striking. Terms like annealing, normalizing, quenching, tempering and drawing are used in heat treating. Tempering (Templar) hardens a die deep into its metal for greater strength.
