- In traditional Hispanic wedding ceremony, brides are given 13 gold coins if the family is wealthy or coin-like tokens in poorer families as a symbol of a husbands pledge to care for the bride financially. This ritual is called las arras, and it dates back to ancient Rome where a coin was broken in half and the pieces given to the bride and groom. Crown-sized coins with holes in them were possibly given in some ceremonies. Also called: Bolos.
