Definition

• Spanish for �end of the bar� said to have created the word �cob� in English for the rough hammer-struck coins of Spain and Spanish America. The word barra (bar) can also refer to a thick sheet or strip, hammered or rolled to the thickness of the coin. The image of a round bar of silver or gold being sliced like sausage is wrong. No equipment for slicing planchets in this way has been found and the process does not fit any historical minting method. Millions of cobs were cut with heavy shears from these strips or sheets.
