Edges of coins Öffentlichkeit Deposited

Definition
  • Many coins have a milled or reeded edge. Often called the third side of a coin, it is the surface perpendicular to the obverse and reverse. Not to be confused with the rim. A grooved edge has a deep groove all around. A lettered edge has text around it. A decorated edge uses symbols instead of letters. An interrupted reeded edge has alternating sections of reeded and plain edge. A herringbone edge forms a series of interconnected arrows or a fish-bone pattern. The Spanish pillar 8 reales of the early 1700s has this. A security edge is reeded with an indented groove in the center. Letters or designs made on the edge of a coin can be applied before or after the strike.
