- The agency of Spain's empire in the Americas from the 1500s to the 1900s which controlled Spanish exploration and exploitation of its colonies. All goods from the Indies were to be accounted for at this Sevilla building. A 20% tax, the quinto a la corona, was levied on all goods entering Spain. By the late 1600s, the empire was failing mainly because of Spain's inability to finance both its global empire and poorly thought-out wars in Europe. The power of Sevilla and the Casa was gradually lost. In 1717 the king moved the Casa to Cadiz, and further limited its powers. Carlos IV abolished it in 1790.
