  • A gold coin of Spain struck during the reign of pretender Alfonso de ��vila (1465-1468) and also by Enrique IV until 1471. 2. Slang for any gold coin bearing the shield of Castilla, but specially those 1/50 of the gold marco in weight. Under Pedro I of Castilla (1350-1368), it was valued at 30 maravedis. 3. A gold unit that of bullion used in the early days of conquest in Mexico. Silver was still relatively scarce and gold was the principal value standard.
