Cerro Rico Öffentlichkeit Deposited

Definition
  • Spanish: A mountain near Potos, Alta Per (now Bolivia), famed for its vast amounts of silver mined for Spain. In 1574 Felipe II founded the mint of the Villa Imperial de Potos a short distance from this, the largest deposit of silver in Spanish America. During the colonial era it enriched Spain with some two billion 8 reales, helping launch the Renaissance in Europe and making Potos a large, prosperous city. The mountain was played out by the early 1800s, leading to an economic decline. It is still mined for silver and tin today by some 15,000 miners working in largely unsafe conditions. Some historians estimate that 8 million men have died because of Cerro Rico since the 1500s.
