  • Copper, a popular metal for coins world-wide for more than 2300 years. It was in more coins than any other metal, since most gold and silver coins used it as an alloy. Since ancient times it has been the main metal for minor coinage. Since 1850 it has been used as the major constituent of brass, bronze, bronzital, verenium, billon, and aluminum-bronze. A bright, shiny red when struck, copper coins tone through a series of browns to chocolate. 2. Slang in Uruguay for small copper tokens, 1867-1871.
