  • Spanish: A counter-stamp or countermark. A word or symbol stamped into coins by local and national government plus various businesses or organizations. Reasons included devaluation of coins, war emergencies and other issues. There are official or semi-official countermarks, applied by punching or stamping coins by some authority. Usually this was establish a new value to the stamped coins. It was an action never intended by the original authorities that issued the coin. When silver and gold circulated, the value stamped was always more than the intrinsic value of the coin.
