- A silver coin first minted by Pedro III of Arag�n in 1285 CE in Barcelona. Coins of this type continued into the 1600s. Its minor coinage included 1/2, 1/3 and 1/4 coins. Coin names in the 1200s included the gros in Catalu�a and France, the grueso in Castilla, the groat in England and the grosso in Italian states. �Grueso� means thick or large in Spanish.
