- Spanish: Cross. Several heraldic cross versions have been used on Hispanic coins. For example, many cobs featured the cross potent with its thick T-shaped limbs. It first appeared in 1504 which looked to many like a windmill on the coins. A series of 8 reales of Mexico 1607-1700 have a cross patonce dividing the castles and lions. By 1620 that cross separated the two castles and two lions of Spains crest on some coins and continued as a main feature into the 1745s. The simple cross filet or cross couped also appears. By 1660 the busts of the king and the detailed shield of Spain replaced the prominent cross on the coins of both Spain and its colonies. Barcelona coins of the early 1600s have an enlongated cross formy on them and others from about 1640 have a thin cross moline. In 1686 Spain put a cross bottony on copper Maria coins. In the 1700s a cross formy topped the crown on coins.
