  • A name for about 80 different late medieval Spanish gold coins. It is a term that can be applied to the double denomination of any coin. 2. The Spanish name for the gold Arab coin equal to the double dinar. 3. A medieval gold coin of Castilla adapted from the Arab dobla. It was introduced by Fernando III (1230-1252 CE), and in various types it continued to Fernando & Isabel in 1497. It acquired various names, such as the enrique (during the reign of Enrique IV), the dobla ecuestre (which featured a king on horseback) the dobla de la banda (having a shield with a diagonal band), the dobla de cabeza (with a bust of the king on it), and during the reign of Enrique IV, the castellano (with a castle on the obverse and a lion on the reverse). During different periods it existed as a dobla of 40, 35, 20 and 15 maraved�s. It was issued over the years in multiples of 50, 20, 10, 5 and 2 doblas, plus 1/2 and 1/4 doblas.
