- The dollar is the Anglicized spelling of the European thaler and was used because of the world-wide acceptance of the thaler and the Spanish milled dollar or piece-of-eight. 2. British slang for money, in singular form: 'Got any dollar?' 3. A dollar was slang for a British crown, or five shillings. The U.S. dollar was not the first coin with that name. James VI of Scotland struck a 30-shilling coin 1567-1571 called the sword dollar. The double merk of 1578 is called the thistle dollar. Charles II of England (1660-1685) also struck a dollar denomination coin for Scotland. Countries using the dollar denomination include Australia, New Zealand, Barbados, Belice, Bermudas, Bahamas, Jamaica, Guyana, Brun�i, Malasia, Singapore, Caim�n Islands, Cook Islands, Fiji, Namibia, Zimbabue, Liberia and Canada.
