  • A gold coin of Spain valued at 375 maraved�s. 2. A coin of account in Spain from the 1500s to the 1700s, with many changes in value. 3. A common name for various gold and silver coins in medieval Europe. It was first minted by Roger II of Sicily in 1140 CE. That coin was copied as the grosso de plata, issued in 1202 by Venice. 4. A gold coin introduced in Arag�n by Juan II in 1475 and in Castilla by Fernando & Isabel in 1497, where it was also known as an excelente de la granada. There were 2, 4, 10, 20, 50, and 100 ducados coins, along with 1/2 and 1/4 ducados.
