- One of several Hispanic gold or silver coins produced beginning in medieval times into the modern. The principal gold denomination of Spain and colonial Spanish America. Literally: �shield.� It started as a French gold coin in 1270 by Louis IX. In Spain the escudo was a gold coin introduced by Carlos V in 1535 to replace the ducado. It was also issued by Fernando VII. 2. A main denomination of several countries including Chile 1960-1975.
