Definizione
  • Spanish: Star of Lima, the silver cob coinage of the Lima mint 1659-1660 with pillars-and-waves named for the prominent star, Limas symbol, in the design. For 67 years the Lima mint was closed while vast quantities of coins were struck in Potos, the primary source of silver in the region. To avoid heavy taxes, some wealthy mine owners were shipping their silver back to Spain, sometimes using contraband routes eastward to Buenos Aires. This situation was complicated by the Potos mint coin debasement scandal and the coinage recall in 1649-1652. When the Lima city leaders asked to re-open the Lima mint in 1658, the Viceroy allowed this as emergency coinage pending Philip IVs permission. The Lima mint struck coins between January 1659 and April 1660. It is unknown why the minting continued for so long without the kings approval. Some believe the sample coins for the king were in the shipwreck of the San Miguel el Arcngel lost off Florida in 1659. That wreck held many star of Lima coins of year 1659.
