Estrellas Publique Deposited
- Spanish: Stars provide two types of information on the modern coins of Spain. During the rule of Isabel II (1833-1868) the number of points on a star on the coins indicated the mint: 6 for Madrid, 7 for Sevilla, 8 for Barcelona, 3 for Segovia and 4 for Jubia. 2. In Spain from 1868 until 1982 the actual year of minting is found in tiny incuse numbers on a small 6-pointed star on the coins. The larger, conventional sized date is the year the coin type was authorized. This series date on coins of 50 centimos and higher in Spain is the more obvious year on the coin, so it is often mistaken for the minting date: 1946, 1947, 1949, 1953, 1957, 1963, 1966, 1975 or 1980. If there are two stars on the coin, one will have 19 and the other 49 for minting year 1949, as an example. Grab your magnifying glass. The cataloging of such pieces is seen as, for example, 1949 (54) or 1949 *54 to refer to 1954 coins. We know of no other nation that has used such a system as Spain did for 116 years.
