  • The monetary unit of the European Union beginning in 1999 with coins and banknotes in use starting in 2002. Each member nation strikes it own version of the coins. The banknotes are centrally produced with �historic� artwork which does not represent any specific monument in Europe, in fairness to all. Euro banknotes come in 500, 200, 100, 50, 20, 10 and 5 denominations. Coins are the 50, 20, 10, 5, 2 and 1 euro cents minted by each nation.
