Janvier reducing lathe Öffentlichkeit Deposited
- A mechanical die-cutting machine which reduced coin and medal oversize hard metal patterns as it cut a die in coin size. Developed by Victor Janvier (1851-1911) in his Paris studio 1892-1899. It was then sold to mints. Its mechanism was able to cut the entire design with lettering in a die, replacing engraving and punching (die sinking) dies by hand. The machines are used today, while advanced mints have replaced them with computer-controlled die cutting. Janvier invented the most advanced and successful die-engraving pantograph. All the detail in the model can be reduced and precisely cut into the die. Todays pantograph can raise or lower a coins relief, flip a design so that a left facing bust faces right, and alter the slope of the field.
