Klippe Public Deposited
- Coins struck on square, rectangular, or lozenge-shaped planchets with well made dies once used for round coins as siege or necessity coinage. Klippe is from the Swedish to clip, or to cut with shears. This odd northern European coin type only appeared once in the Hispanic world during the start of pillar dollar period at Mexico City in 1733-1734 as a series of silver transitional 8 and 4 reales with a cob design. They were minted on a screw press and were then cut to their proper weight by hand, usually resulting in squared edges. There are rare 1600s klippes of Austria, Brazil, France, Netherlands, Poland, Switzerland, Sweden, Transylvania and several Germanic states.
