Maravedi Öffentlichkeit Deposited
- One of the oldest of Spain's coins. It began as an Arab coin in Al Andalus. The word is from the Arabic morabeti, meaning that of the Almoravides. Words linked to it include morobatinus, maravedinos, and maurobatinus. Numerous spellings exist: maravedi de oro, maravedi burgal, maravedi prieto, maravedi chico, and maravedi usual. A gold maravedi was minted by Alfonso VIII in 1172. During the reign of Alfonso X (1252-1284), billon maravedis were made. Over the centuries hundreds of types of maravedis were coined in gold, silver and copper. By the time of the Spanish American colonies it had become a minor coin. The coin was not continued by the independent American nations after 1808 or so. The last in Spain was issued by Isabel II, in 1858, just before it became a centimo de real.
