  • Spanish: Also Marca chinica. A chop, done in China, Philippines, Indonesia and other Asian countries with Chinese merchants in them. The activity is called shroffing and began around 1770 and continued for 150 years. The chop punches bore Chinese characters, placed there after a small cut or dig into the coin assures the merchant that the coin is proper silver. A trade dollar without chops is described as having a clean field. More commonly called marca china.
