- Spanish: Pillar dollar. A popular name for the Spanish-American 8 reales coin used extensively in trade throughout the world during the 1700s and 1800s. They were legal tender in the USA until 1853. First introduced in 1732 in M�xico. The name refers to the Pillars of H�rcules on the coin.
