- Spanish: Government run pawn shops providing financial help to the poor. A charity formed in the late 1400s in France, Spain and Italy, they were also set up in the Americas. They evolved into a Hispanic type of Savings & Loans. Literally: Mount of piety (English) Monte di piet�� (Italian), and Mont de pi�t� (French). A source of coins now and then.
