• There is no U.S. law against using actual currency in a motion picture or television show. In fact, using something that looks like real money would cause more trouble with the government. To use prop money you must comply with the Counterfeit Detection Act of 1992 in the U.S. Code, under Printing and Filming of United States and Foreign Obligations & Securities. In the 1960s prop houses in the Hollywood area had quantities of real surplus Mexico revolutionary banknotes because they looked like the large 1800s U.S. banknotes.
