- The former principal denomination of Spain beginning in 1868 and ending with the start of the euro coins in 2002. Its name comes from the Catal�n pesset, diminutive for �peso�, which in the 1600s was a 2 reales coin of Spain issued in Barcelona. It was first used in Catalu�a during the War of Sucession 1705-1714. The former colonies of Equatorial Guinea and Western Sahara issued peseta coins. 2. Spanish American slang for a 25 centavo coin or 2 real piece. This word refers to any coin that is 1/4 of a main denomination. 3. Slang in Cuba for the 20 centavo coin.
