- Literally �weight.� A word synonymous in Spanish colonial times with the silver 8 reales coin. A gold and silver coin denomination during the rule of Isabel II, Alfonso XII and Alfonso XIII in Puerto Rico and the Philippine Islands. The principal denomination of many Spanish heritage nations. Costa Rica in 1850 was the first nation to adopt the peso as an official denomination. It was followed by Chile in 1853, Peru and Colombia in 1864 and Mexico in 1865. It is the current principal coin in Argentina, Cuba, Dominican Republic and Uruguay. The Philippine piso was once spelled �peso� before 1898 when the islands were under Spanish administration. In Argentina, it was replaced by the austral 1985-1992. In Chile it was replaced by the escudo 1960-1975.
