- A large one-sided medallic iem, less than 18 inches (or 50 cm) in size. A plate or tablet usually intended to be mounted on a wall. They have been popular since the 1400s, usually cast because coin presses cannot strike pieces larger than 8 inches (20 cm). Smaller versions are called plaquettes and be two-sided. A medal is given usually to a person, and a plaque is presented to an organization or a group. 2. A badge, usually heraldically shaped bronze, with a fastening device in the back so it can be worn on a uniform or hat. There are also cloth patches that serve as metal badges. Collecting military, law enforcement and fire fighting badges is popular. Also: Divisa. 3. The insignia of a knighthood order.
