• The British Museum�s project to encourage people to document archaeological objects found in England and Wales. If a batch of coins is found it must be reported. Archaeologists and scholars then record, investigate and document the find, and the government has an opportunity to purchase the material at market value for museums. If not, the finder can sell it, sharing half with the property owner, minus taxes. Thus market forces support archeology by giving finders an incentive to report items. Without this, finders become looters - as in other nations. Hoards discovered would never be reported, sold off without provenance. This law gives coins a paper trail from the ground to the museum or a coin dealer's inventory.
